On his return from Siglunes, Ari had taken little Stefnir up to the ski slopes for the afternoon, as Kristín had suggested, while she put her feet up for a while at the house on Eyrargata.

The skiing had been an adventure for both of them. Rather than booking a private lesson just for his son, Ari Thór had decided to join him, thinking it would be a good bonding experience. Stefnir had squealed with delight to be sliding on skis in the snow. Their instructor, a young woman from Siglufjörður, had been especially patient with her two absolute novice skiers.

The mountain was a stunning place to be in the winter sun. The weather had stayed fine all day, and neither the snow nor the wind had got in the way of their fun. After his encounter with Svavar at the hotel, the boat trip to Siglunes that morning and the high spirits on the ski slopes that afternoon, Ari Thór was looking forward to a relaxing evening. He and Stefnir were driving back into town, on their way to meet Kristín at the hotel bar for a hot chocolate, when Ögmundur called.

Ari Thór was reluctant to answer the phone. He sighed, turning his gaze to the fjord, which was shimmering in the light of the setting sun. Then he took a deep breath, savouring the feeling of peace and quiet for one more second before he accepted the call. He had instructed his second-in-command only to bother him if it was a matter of absolute necessity.

Ögmundur got straight to the point. ‘Ari Thór, there’s a girl here who wants to talk to you.’

‘A girl?’ Ari Thór didn’t see how this could possibly be urgent.

‘She says her name’s Jenný. That’s all I know.’

‘Can’t this wait? I’m busy. Just take her statement,’ Ari Thór replied, not bothering to hide the frustration in his voice.

‘She’s insisting on talking to you. And I’m not really up to speed with the Unnur investigation,’ Ögmundur protested.

Ari Thór sighed. ‘And she told you it had to do with that case, I presume?’

‘She didn’t have to. It’s obvious. It’s not like we’re investigating anything else right now, is it?’ Ögmundur quipped, probably not realising how disrespectful that sounded.

‘Can’t you just take care of it, Ögmundur? I’m in the car with my son at the moment.’

‘Listen, you’re the one she wants to speak to. Her old man knows you, apparently, and it’s a sensitive matter. That’s all she’s told me,’ he insisted.
